StarCAVE Tracking System

During Summer 2007, I worked with the Immersive Visualization Lab (IVL) at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). Our most complex and sophisticated environment was the StarCAVE, a fully immersive visualization environment created by 5 walls consisting of three walls and a projectable floor. Two high definition projectors generate a stereo image for each screen, plus four projectors for the floor, totaling 34 projectors in the StarCAVE. For head and hand tracking of the user within the environment we used a wireless, optical ART GmbH tracking system consisting of four cameras and a 3D joystick. I deployed, configured, and calibrated a custom tracking system for the StarCAVE, a complex procedure requiring a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of electromagnetic wave propagation in the infrared spectrum. The resulting environment enables seamless tracking of the user's hand and head with six degrees of freedom as they navigate effortlessly through a 3D virtual environment.
